Demodex mites (démodécie humaine) is a genus of a parasite. They are usually non-pathogenic mites. They invade the skin and live in the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of animals and humans. Also Known as the Demodex mite, the bug lives in the hair follicles of humans and feed on oils, hormones, and fluids present around the follicle.
The infestation is generally common and does not cause any symptoms but can cause skin diseases in some cases. About 65 species of Demodex are known till date out of which Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are typically found in humans. Also known as eyelash mites, They are primarily found in the face, area near to nose, eyelash and eyebrow, an also in places elsewhere on the body. They are considered smallest among arthropods and belong to the family Demodicidae.
Some of the common species found are: Demodex aries; Demodex bovis (infests cattle); Demodex cati (infests cats), Demodex folliculorum (infests humans); Demodex ghanensis (infests cattle) etc.
