Demodicosis in humans(menneskelige infektioner med Demodex) is a skin condition caused by microscopic mites that can live on the skin of humans and animals. The mites called: demodex, it lives in depths of sebaceous glands and near the hair follicles. There are more than 60 species of demodex. Demodex folliculorum, Demodex brevis and Demodex canis live on humans. Animals: dogs, cats and other pets are not as lucky as humans because the rest of the demodex species belongs to them and can not be found on humans.
For the very first time, demodex mites (Demodex folliculorum) were identified in 1842. The size of adult Demodex mite is 0.3 mm - 0.4mm in length. Its tiny body is covered with shells, allowing the mites to stay in the hair follicles. The mites have good digestive system which allows them to eat sebum oil. Demodex can leave hair follicles and stay on the skin surface. You could compare the demodex to an awl and say that Demodex is a night creature. It can not stand the sun light. During the day, demodex mites go deep inside hair follicles, avoiding the light. It come out at night to feed, to breed and to visit neighbours. Cruising speed is 8-16 sm / hour. It seems slow but when you multiply by 8 - 10 hours (average sleeping time for people), the mites can cover pretty long distances. In 8 - 10 hours, demodex mite can crawl from head to toe.
The female demodex mites is shorter and rounder compare to males. These skin parasites live very short life - only a few weeks. The female demodex lay eggs in depths of hair follicle and sebaceous gland. New babies - skin mites are born withing 3-4 days. The old demodex dies decomposing in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands.
Most people have demodex on the skin. But why some humans go through life without even noticing the mites and others suffer from demodicosis?! The answer is - the immunity. Properly functioning immune system is what controls the mites and prevents demodicosis. All humans are different so is our immune system. For many people the immune system does not function as effective as it should. Increased number of demodex mites leads to demodicosis.
